Buchanan incorporated as a village on June 11, 1907.[4] The village was named after Robert Buchanan, a local rancher who died in 1919.[5] In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Buchanan had a population of 237 living in 121 of its 141 total private dwellings, a change of 8.7% from its 2016 population of 218.
