Five minutes north of town, this 30-acre parcel fronts Highway 813 and is already set up to work. The centrepiece is a 48x72 ft steel shop built for serious use. The floor is heavy-duty concrete poured to handle commercial truck traffic, the yard and driveway are packed gravel to match, and there's a two-piece bathroom inside. But the feature that stops people is the door. It's a full-width hydraulic bi-fold door, the kind you'd see on an aircraft hangar. When it opens, the panels fold upward and out, creating a large covered canopy over the entire concrete apron in front of the shop. What that means practically: you have protected working space outside the building without setting foot in the rain or direct sun. Work on equipment, load a trailer, or stage materials, all under cover. Such a great feature. The LED lighting inside is bright and even throughout, and the door opening is large enough to drive a semi and lowboy through..There's a skid shack on site with a functional kitchen, sleeping quarters, separate bedroom, bathroom, and office space. Use it to run your operation from, or live in it while you build on the property. The land is a mix of open pasture and treed areas with a long gravel driveway set back from the highway. Room to build, room to operate, and room to grow. The uses here are genuinely varied: commercial operation, trades or contracting base with highway access, acreage build with a ready-made shop, or equipment storage at scale. Small holding tanks for water and sewer are present, along with power and natural gas.

Colinton Alberta Information

Colinton is a hamlet in northern Alberta, Canada within Athabasca County.[3] It is located 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) east of Highway 2 on Highway 663, approximately 121 kilometres (75 mi) north of Edmonton. The Hamlet of Colinton consists of two designated places defined by Statistics Canada – Colinton and McNabb’s – as well additional lands south of McNabb’s that is not currently located within either designated place.[4][5] James Maurice Milne, owner of the land on which the railway station was built, named the hamlet after Colinton, Scotland, his birthplace.[6] Previously Colinton was known as Kinnoull.[7] In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Colinton had a population of 169 living in 68 of its 100 total private dwellings, a change of -33.5% from its 2016 population of 254. With a land area of 3.55 km2 (1.37 sq mi), it had a population density of 47.6/km2 (123.3/sq mi) in 2021.[2] As a designated place in the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, by combining the designated places of “Colinton” and “McNabb’s”, Colinton recorded a population of 249 living in 101 of its 118 total private dwellings, a change of -9.1% from its 2011 population of 274 . With a land area of 2.89 km2 (1.12 sq mi), it had a population density of 86.2/km2 (223.2/sq mi) in 2016.[8] This Northern Alberta location article is a stub. Understanding Topsoil Depth in Alberta: Insights from AAFC SLC Version 3.2 Data

Topsoil depth is a critical factor for agricultural productivity, influencing water retention, nutrient availability, and root growth. The provided map of Alberta illustrates the topsoil depth in inches, highlighting significant regional variations. This analysis is based on data from the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Soil Landscapes of Canada (SLC) Version 3.2.

Key Observations

The topsoil depth in Western Alberta and the Rockies is generally shallow, ranging from 0 to 6 inches. This is due to the rugged terrain and erosional processes associated with mountainous regions. The shallow topsoil in these areas supports forests and natural vegetation rather than extensive agriculture.

Central Alberta, including areas around Edmonton and Red Deer, exhibits moderate to deep topsoil depths, generally between 8 to 14 inches. These depths are conducive to productive agriculture, supporting a variety of crops. The deeper topsoil in central regions contributes to higher agricultural yields and sustainable farming practices.

In Southern and Eastern Alberta, regions such as Calgary and areas towards the Saskatchewan border show variable topsoil depths ranging from 6 to 10 inches. While suitable for agriculture, these areas may require careful soil management to maintain productivity. Areas with shallower topsoil are more drought-resistant and may need irrigation and soil conservation practices.

Regional Analysis

The Rocky Mountain Influence is evident in the shallow topsoil of the Rocky Mountain foothills, resulting from the rocky and rugged terrain, limiting soil accumulation. These areas are more suited to forest growth and natural vegetation rather than intensive agriculture.

In contrast, the Prairie Conditions in central Alberta benefit from moderate to deep topsoil, which is ideal for crop production and supports Alberta’s agricultural economy. Maintaining topsoil depth through conservation practices is essential for sustaining long-term agrarian productivity in these areas.

Implications for Agriculture

Understanding topsoil depth is crucial for effective soil management practices, including crop selection, irrigation, and fertilization. Farmers can use this data to optimize their farming practices, choosing crops suited to the available topsoil depth and implementing appropriate soil conservation measures. Deeper topsoil improves water retention and nutrient availability, which is essential for healthy crop growth and high yields.

Conclusion

The topsoil depth map of Alberta reveals significant regional variations influenced by geographical features such as the Rocky Mountains and the fertile plains of central Alberta. Understanding these variations is crucial for optimizing agricultural practices and ensuring sustainable farming. By leveraging this data, farmers can improve crop yields, manage soil health, and enhance overall agrarian productivity in Alberta.
